THE CURRENT ARCHAEOLOGY
DEVELOPER-FUNDED ARCHAEOLOGY AWARD
The BAA award recognises the excavation of the unique cattle bone deposit recovered from the inner ditch of the largest barrow, one of the largest deposits of late Neolithic/early Bronze Age cattle remains recovered in Britain,
containing parts of around 100 animals.
The analysis of this deposit by Northamptonshire Archaeology,in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology at Sheffield University,
has provided a challenging interpretation which suggests that the ceremony accompanying the deposition of the bones was a far more complex process than the simple deposition of feasting debris. The results of this analysis have been published in issue 195 of Current Archaeology, reviewing the BAA entries.
