Historic Gardens
The reputation of Northamptonshire Archaeology for garden archaeology was established with the extensive excavation of the gardens at Kirby Hall, Northamptonshire, for English Heritage, and the Privy Garden at Hampton Court Palace (right) for the Royal Palaces.

In both instances the excavation preceded and informed the restoration of the garden, and at Hampton Court, Steve Parry (NA Principal Archaeologist) was a member of the Research and Design Team which guided this process.

Our experience has also lead to work in Europe at the invitation of the French Ministry of Culture and the Town Council of Agreda, Northern Spain.

Other notable projects include work at Chiswick House Grounds, London for English Heritage; an evaluation and proposals for restoration and stabilisation of The Dell at Goodwood House, West Sussex for the Earl and Countess of March and excavation and geophysical survey at Battersea Park, London, as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund restoration project.

Work is currently in progress at Stowe Landscape Gardens, Buckinghamshire for the National Trust. The garden has been described as 'the greatest work of art in western Europe'. The work has involved excavation, geophysical survey, watching briefs and building recording.
