Historic Research
The preparation of desk-based studies summarising the state of existing archaeological and historical knowledge relating to any proposed development or other scheme of works forms the first stage of most projects.

The background research typically involves consultation of the local Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) and a search for relevant historic maps and other documents in the local Record Office. In addition, checks are made on the availability of aerial photographs, often conducted through the National Record Office, and any significant details will be transcribed to a modern map base. Plans and surveys carried out on behalf of the clients are also often consulted.

The end product will be a report that will inform decisions regarding the need for further research, perhaps involving direct fieldwork investigation, and thereby aiding the planning process and the preparation of appropriate mitigation strategies.

More specialised historic analysis can also be undertaken. At Kirby Hall, near Corby, an archive of the architectural collection of wood and stone objects has been produced for English Heritage. At Wollaton Hall, Nottingham, analysis of documentary evidence and geophysical survey have contributed to a Management Plan produced for Nottingham City Council to enable the archaeology of the park to be protected and interpreted.
